DOCTOR WHO SPOILERS: LOOK AWAY IF THEY CAUSE PAIN

So I don’t think John Hurt is necessarily going to reveal the Doctor’s true name.

Doctor: The name you choose is like a promise you make. He’s the one that broke the promise … he is my secret.

‘Doctor’ basically means a healer, do no harm and that sort of shabang. The Doctor chose that title because presumably that’s what he wanted to do, no harm etc.

Then the Time War happens. He commits atrocities and kills his own species. He breaks his promise as a ‘Doctor’.

And John Hurt’s Doctor gives a reason:

JH: What I did, I did without choice.

Doctor: I know (also observe that the Doctor knows what he did, suggesting that this isn’t a future incarnation in the Doctor’s timeline).

JH: In the name of peace and sanity.

Doctor: But not in the name of the Doctor.

I get the feeling then that the 50th Anniversary will somehow be about the Time War.

As to how John Hurt fits into it all, no idea. The Time Lords were said to have done some bad things to perpetuate the war, such as resurrection (the Master, Rassilon).

One theory being circulated is that the 11th Doctor is an imposter. Let’s take this and adapt it a little: Could it be the Doctor actually died during the Time War and was brought back in John Hurt’s form (and thus the pain of what he did made him want to forget and even regenerate as much as possible)?

Alternatively, Hurt’s Doctor has been reported as being an amalgamation of the NuWho era (9, 10 and 11). Again, resorting to TimeLordAtrocities, could the Time Lords have decided to somehow bind bits of him together to make him a better warrior? This idea seems weak and came as a bit of a stretch to my mind.

Just speculation really, and I’m excited as to how Moff will deal with him. But I really don’t think we all need to hate him before he’s even been explained.
